How to Make a Movie

Making a movie is a fun way to express your artistic abilities and share a message with others. You might be surprised what you can create with relatively little equipment. With video editing software, you can take average video footage and transform it into a polished piece of art. Below are the basic steps to making your own movie.

Deciding What Story to Tell

When you make a movie, you first need to have a story to tell. The story can be fictional or it can tell events that have actually occurred. Whether you're making a historical film of the civil war or a children's movie about a girl who can fly, you'll need to know what events are going to occur in your film and what the overall message is that you want to convey.

Create a Storyboard

Once you have an idea of what you want to film, take time to plan how each scene will progress. Draw simple sketches for each scene that describe what will occur. Consider which actors need to appear in each scene and what they need to say. Plan which costumes they'll wear and the props they'll need.

Planning the scenes of your film is one of the most important aspects of making a movie. It causes you to stop and think about what resources you'll need, including actors, costumes, background designs, props, lighting and camera angles. It will also help you decide in what order to record the scenes of your movie. The better you plan, the smoother the rest of the process will go.

Identify the Cast

In addition to having a strong storyline and a concrete plan when you make a movie, you'll want to have good actors. However, the quality of your acting crew's skills is relative to what you're planning on doing with your film. For instance, you may not need to be so fussy about who stars in the production if you're just making the movie for your family reunion. If you plan to make a movie to enter in a movie-making contest, you may want to be more particular about who performs in the picture depending on their acting skills.

Prepare Your Resources

The next thing to consider when you make a movie is the costumes, props and sets you'll need. If your subject is in a crowd of people, consider putting the subject in a color that will stand out a little so your audience can quickly identify where in the scene to focus. If your subject is going to be climbing a ladder, be sure you have a ladder. This may seem like an obvious detail, but it's easy to forget props when you're coordinating a film. You'll also want to determine whether you plan to shoot your movie on location or create a background image for your set.

Filming

Now that you've prepared, you're ready to start filming the movie. Be sure to record a little more time before and after each clip to give yourself room to trim and work with the footage. If your footage has unwanted audio, consider removing the audio in the editing process and adding voiceovers. Try to have consistent lighting in your footage so that the clips will flow better when you are ready to combine them.

Editing Your Movie

After you've taken all of the footage for your movie, you can combine it into a finished product. Video editing software can help you trim and arrange the clips. It can also help you make small adjustments in the color and brightness. However, keep in mind that if you have poorly filmed footage, it will be difficult even with the most advanced video editing software to create a quality product.

As you edit your film, you can remove unwanted audio, add in special effects and transitions, and insert background music and voiceovers. You can also add Foley, which are sound effects such as clothing moving as your subject turns or footsteps on rocks when your subject walks across cobblestones. These small details can add to the professional feel of your film.

After you have the movie compiled, you can create chapter breaks and add a menu to your movie. You can also add a title, ending credits and other such details. Video editing software also walks you through the process of exporting your project in the format you want. For instance, you can burn it on a Blu-ray Disc or upload it directly to YouTube.
